Practical tips

Make sure you’re ready for winter

Winter’s on the way. So are we.

How our fleet is ready for whatever the season throws at it

Snow, ice, rain and darker evenings – winter is when the roads get tricky, and when breakdowns and accidents become more likely. It’s also when being stranded is at its most uncomfortable (and most risky).

So we’ve built a fleet that’s ready for it. Here’s how some of our key vehicles earn their keep when the temperature drops.

Service vans: First on the scene

Our service vans are everyday heroes, but they’re far from ordinary. Each one carries a wide range of tools and diagnostic kit, so our technicians can fix cars and vans right there at the roadside. When it’s bitterly cold, that saves drivers from a long, chilly wait.

Winter brings more flat batteries, tyre trouble and minor mechanical faults, so these vans are busy.

Commercial service vans: Bigger tools for bigger vehicles

Commercial vehicles need heavier equipment, and winter makes roadside repairs more complex. Our commercial service vans carry an inventory of parts for fleet repairs, so we can deal with everything from tyre problems to cold-start engine trouble and get HGVs and vans back on the move.

Heavy underlifts: For when lorries lose their grip

Icy roads and snowbanks catch out heavy vehicles too. Our heavy underlifts slide their lifting arm beneath the casualty vehicle and raise it, so we can recover lorries and trucks safely – even from awkward roadside spots.

Low loaders: When it can’t be towed

If a vehicle is badly damaged, or a trailer can’t be moved by an underlift, the low loader carries it away and clears the road completely. After a winter rollover, it often works alongside our rotators.

7.5-tonne slidebeds: Nimble when it counts

Lighter and easier to manoeuvre, our 7.5-tonne slidebeds are ideal for smaller commercial vehicles and vans, especially in busy towns and cities. They help us clear roads quickly and get traffic moving again.

Rotators: Our winter heroes

When a heavy vehicle has rolled over or slid off the road, the rotator steps in. Using its rotating crane to upright vehicles from tricky spots, it can bring an HGV back onto its wheels and recover it safely – whether it’s on an icy carriageway or stuck in a snowdrift. We wouldn’t be without it.

4x4s: Small but mighty

Snow, ice and mud have a habit of leaving vehicles stuck in places that are hard to reach. Our 4x4s have the agility and power to get there and winch them out.
